10 Tips for Working from Home

Are you interested in working from home? “Telecommuting” is not something new, but it has become more and more popular over the past few years.

I have put together 10 tips in working from home:

#1 – Talk to your current employer, and tell them how it would be beneficial to them to allow you to work from home. Some employers do not like the idea because of the field that you are in, so it is not feasible to allow working from home. You will need to keep this in mind when speaking to your employer.

#2 – Research job websites for “work at home” or “telecommute” positions.

#3 – If you cannot find a work at home business – think about starting your own business from home. Do you have a special talent? You can market yourself to major companies to offer your services while you work at home.

#4 – Be patient – some people do look for months to find that perfect work at home job.

#5 – Working at home sounds great…you think “wow! my house will be so much cleaner!” or “I can catch up on all my soaps!” Wrong! If you work at home, you will need to have extra discipline to get your work done.

#6 – Have a dedicated work space. You don’t need to have a complete room for your office, but you do need a desk area that is not on the kitchen counter or coffee table in your living room.

#7 – Set clear hours for your family. Let them know that you will be working at these times.

#8 – Depending on your job, you will need high-speed internet access. Some Internet companies have package deals that you may want to take advantage of (phone, internet and cable television)

#9 – Keep good records and save your receipts. Most of the office supplies that you purchase can be used as taxable write-offs.

#10 – As with any job, remain professional.
