How do free-content and free-membership websites earn money?
Google bought Youtube for $1.65 B. Google offered to buy Friendster in 2003 for $30 M but they were turned down. Yahoo was rumored to have offered $ 1 B to acquire Facebook and that Google tried to outbid Yahoo with $ 2.3 B bid. This October 2007, Microsoft announced that it had bought 1.6% share of Facebook for $ 246 M!
From what I know, aside from ads, websites earn money trough the traffic. Internet Service Providers pay these websites depending on the traffic these ISPs get with these websites. (People pay for the Internet connection, ISPs get a bulk of these money then ISPs pay the websites). Friendster, Facebook and Youtube are accessed by millions of people daily.
Question now is:
Is the traffic can really make websites earn million bucks in a year? (I believe ads generate a little money only)
If indeed traffic can, how come Wikipedia is still seeking for donations? (Millions of people visit Wikipedia daily)
