Make money short-term in the stock market?

I am really in the need of money. I just got laid off and have very little money in the savings. I do not have too much debt, but a little. I want to know what I can do to make a little extra money in the stock market every month and perhaps some good stocks to invest in. I think I have already made a mistake investing in Citigroup.

I normally would say that you should short a stock which means that you would just be sying that the stock will go down. That though I think has been virtually erased as it is half the reason the economy went down.
