Where can you buy non-protected music online that you can transfer from your PC to play on an MP3 player?

I have purchased music from a variety of sites except i-tunes, where the music will only play on my PC. When you load it onto an SD memory card or try upload directly to a MP3 player, it doesn’t play. I feel cheated because I payed money for the track and should be able to play it wherever I want… when I want it. This isn’t about copying music to disk to give to friends… it’s about being able to use what I purchase freely.

It is because your MP3 player is not compatible.

This is still unfortunately a confusing area in online music. You have to pair your music player to a compatible site for it to work.

There are currently 2 types of downloads (besides non-protected)

1. Licensed and owned. – you buy the track and and can load it to a compatible player or play it on a pc or burn it to disk. You own it forever.

2. Licensed subscription. – you subcribe to a service and can load the track to a compatible player or play it on a pc but NOT burn it to disk. The track remains playable as long as you are a subscriber.

P.S. One other thing: The tracks you bought can be burned to CD. You can then rip them to and unprotected MP3, and load them on your player. The sound quality will suffer somewhat though.

Another thing: I have a Sandisk M240 that is great, It works with a number of sites and subscription music where I can download anything I want for 14.95/ month. It is the 1GB model and holds about 20 albums – costs about 100 bucks. They also make a 2gb and 4gb model.
