were do internet companies make their money??

for example… google, i know google earth pro is for sale… but the normal one is free, and all the toolbars are free… its free to do searches… who exactly gives google any money?? big companies might buy google earth pro for little presentations… but other than that… were is the money coming from?? same with yahoo… i didnt pay to get on here… and neither did you.. so how does yahoo make money?? is it all through the little advertisements and banners you get at the top of the page??
