Bling-Bling (or simply Bling) has become synonymous with hip hop, an omnipresent part of the lifestyle of hip hop.
In a word, "bling" is a ideophone – a word used to transmit a sound or feel of some others. "Bling" according to the culture of rap, is the imagined sound light makes that shining in a bright surface, such as diamonds, gold and other jewelry. In hip hop, is used as a synonym for expensive and flashy jewelry, cars, etc.

While most hip hop fans think that the term "bling" was coined by rapper Lil Wayne, who has even gone on record to say he was the original creator of the term, the truth is that this term is much older and less glamorous origins.

It was in the 1980 Ultra Brite the toothpaste maker, ran a commercial that mimicked the sound of a bell, as its motto – "UltraBrite gives your mouth … [sampling] … sex appeal. Soon, comedians at SNL is parodying this sound and called "bling". Over time, the players began to use to describe anything flashy jewelry traditionally used by traffickers.

And then of course, was adopted by rappers to describe your own fashion, firstly, it seems, from Lil Wayne. Soon, the term was in the rap community into the mainstream. Today, the term is universally recognized, with everyone from housewives to students' average age middle school use.

In shoots of hip hop, and reggaeton from Puerto Rico, is slightly modified to "blink-blink. The meaning, however, remains the same.

Interesting fact: Rappers today choose not to use the term "bling" anymore. But now they call their jewelry "diamonds".
