How to get a short story published?
I’ve always been interested in writing, but more recently I’ve been wondering how I could get my work into magazines, either for no payment, or for payment. Also, I was wondering how I could find contests: every time I search for them, they’re always in the USA, which is really no use seeing as I live in the UK.
Has anyone got any suggestions how I could get a short story published, or enter a competition, preferably without having to pay a fee?
Check your local library for the Writers Market – or the UK equivalent. It lists publishers of all genres, so you can select the ones most appropriate to the stories you have written. There are writers associations, and if you join one of these, they are usually very much aware of any contests going on and will be able to put you in the loop. Most contests do have fees, however, so I doubt you’ll find one for free. You’re better off just submitting your stories to publishers.
